A New Path Forward

A new approach to treatment-resistant depression

SPRAVATO® (esketamine) at Mercury Mental Health

SPRAVATO® is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is often covered by insurance (with prior authorization).
How is SPRAVATO® different from ketamine? Ketamine contains two mirror-image molecules (S and R enantiomers). SPRAVATO® is esketamine, the S-enantiomer of ketamine. Esketamine can help some people with depression who have not responded well to standard antidepressant treatments.

This treatment may be a good fit for:

  • Adults who have not experienced sufficient improvement after at least two trials of different antidepressants.

  • Those who have not tolerated traditional antidepressants well, including side effects like weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or emotional and motivational blunting.

  • Those who want relief fast. SPRAVATO® (esketamine) works differently than standard antidepressants and may help some within hours to days.

Please note: Eligibility will be determined during your initial appointment.

How treatment is scheduled

  • Day One: Initial evaluation appointment

  • Month One: 2 treatment sessions weekly

  • Month Two: 1 treatment session weekly

  • Maintenance: treatment sessions occur weekly or every 2 weeks for those who receive benefit

What to expect at your Spravato in-office visit

  • Brief check-in and vitals → self-administer SPRAVATO® under supervision → quiet recovery with monitoring for 2 hours in a comfortable recliner with optional eye mask, blanket, and gentle music.

  • Please plan to arrange for a ride home.

Adverse effects

Most side effects from Spravato occur during or shortly after treatment (such as dissociation, sedation, dizziness, nausea, and temporary increases in blood pressure), which is why patients are monitored in-office for at least two hours. For many patients, side effects are temporary and resolve the same day. Long-term or persistent side effects are uncommon, and we monitor for safety throughout treatment.
